Bread Pudding Recipe

Rocke and I were introduced to this decadent recipe at the annual Rotary BBQ when Maelyn Ritter, the Queen Anne Rotary President 2011-2012 brought it as her potluck contribution.  Check out our award winning chili from the same event at the link below.   We have modified it slightly to adjust to cooking at home, but there is a story behind this famous pudding.

Marjorie, a local Seattle restaurant, has somewhat of a “cult following” for the bread pudding.  Upon pastry chef, Manda Mangrai’s arrival in February 2005, they removed it from their regular menu so she could put her own “stamp” on this Marjorie dessert.  After experiencing somewhat of an uprising from their regular clientele, they reinstated the bread pudding’s proper place on the menu, and it is said this is the best they’ve ever had.

Tesla Model S - Motor Trend 2013 Car of the Year

Investing in new technology can be scary, but it was love at first sight when I saw the Model S and all reason went out the door.  It is nice to have confirmation that my belief in the technology and the three year wait was vindicated.    My new Tesla Model S that I have named Ruby, is everything I had hoped for and more.

She was named both Motor Trend’s Car of the year, as well as Automobile Magazine’s, and the positive press continues.

Medicare Open Enrollment Oct 15 to Dec 7

David Johnson, Medicare supplement and Long Term Care specialist with Lehman Wood Johnson, Inc., reminds us the Medicare open enrollment period is from October 15 through December 7.  Any changes made during open enrollment are effective as of January 1, 2013.  This is the time during which people with Medicare can make new choices and pick plans that work best for them. Each year Medicare plans typically change what they cost and cover. In addition, your health-care needs may have changed over the past year. The open enrollment period is your opportunity to switch Medicare health and prescription drug plans to better suit your needs.

Tesla Delivered!

On the 25th Anniversary of the 1987 BlackMonday crash my Tesla was delivered after a two year and ten month wait.  Black Monday and the red Tesla were both breathtaking.  I was a fixed income trading floor manager in ’87 and wouldn’t want anyone to live through another 20+% one-day drop in the US equities market, but I would want everyone to be able to take delivery of their dreams.  I am committed to the creation and maintenance of your wealth in order for you to live your dreams!

Nellie Cashman Woman of the Year Event

Almost every year for the twelve years I have attended the inspiring annual award ceremony with my friend and past Nellie winner, TishJohnson.  The Nellie is organized by the Woman Business Owners of Puget Sound and is always a motivator listening to the challenges and success of women entrepreneurs.  I recommend it to anyone thinking of starting a business or running their own.

IRA and Retirement Plan Limits Increase in 2013

The maximum amount you can contribute to a traditional IRA or Roth IRA in 2013 increases to $5,500 (or 100% of your earned income, if less), up from $5,000 in 2012. Many other plan limits increase as well.

The Great Pumpkin Recipe

The Great pumpkin recipe is out of the Big Green Egg Cookbook for “Eggheads”.  The Green Egg is the best charcoal BBQ ever invented.  This recipe is loosely based from a recipe out of a Native American cookbook.  The pumpkin was a staple of both Colonial America and Native Americans.  The original recipe called for ground buffalo or ground venison mixed with Italian sausages, so feel free to add your own substitutions.   It is always a special treat each year when the Pie Pumpkins show up in the produce department.

The Investment Tax Landscape: Countdown to 2013

Victoria Trigg reminds us that the tax landscape will likely be changing in 2013.  In December 2010, Congress extended the so-called Bush-era tax cuts.  However, for investors, the legislation may have been a stay of execution rather than a full pardon.  As of January 1, 2013, federal tax rates on income, qualifying dividends, and capital gains (among other provisions) are scheduled to revert to previous levels.  Given recent partisan wrangling, no one can be completely sure about precisely what will happen.

Trends and Innovations: Self-Driving Cars Approved

California, Nevada and Florida have all approved the use of self-driving cars, and similar bills are pending in at least three other states.  While the availability of these vehicles is likely a few years away, the legislation is expected to propel the development of self-driving technology even further.  Google is one of the leaders at the moment, with General Motors, and Nissan, among others, vying to take a piece of the driverless pie.

Patio Rebuild in Yakima

Rocke and I spent a great deal of time this spring and summer rebuilding the deck at my parent’s house.  I originally designed the existing 45’X60’ deck 40 years ago and still loved it but it had lost its integrity and had to be replaced.  We had the new deck engineered and designed by our friend, Nancy Charron of Traho Architects.  We took a week off to demo the old deck and trellis and then spent a week rebuilding.  My daughter and her friends, Loch and Allyn, spent a weekend helping stain the wood and hanging the big beams.

Hole in One – Almost!

I am new to golf and accomplished my first birdie by landing the ball only a few inches from the hole on the fourth hole of the Nile Golf Course.   I don’t get out on the course very often so I rely on my personal trainer, Byron Dondoyano for golf conditioning.  It really helps prepare you even if you can’t spend several days a week golfing.  My best friend, Tish Johnson, and I try to play nine holes every Monday at Glen Acres, and my husband and I every Friday at the Nile.   With all of our various business and personal activities I feel fortunate if I get out two or three times a month.

Tesla Supercharger: Drive for Free, Forever, on Sunlight.

The countdown continues as we’ve learned 400 Teslas have now been delivered – only 688 more to go before Candy finally gets hers, and the excitement continues!  ElonMusk, CEO and product architect for Tesla Motors recently revealed the Supercharger network of charging stations it has secretly been building.  These Supercharger stations can add 150 miles of range in about 30 minutes of charging time, and perhaps best of all, these stations will remain free forever for Tesla owners.  Musk is also the CEO and CTO of SpaceX (world’s most advanced rockets and spacecraft) and chairman of SolarCity (revolutionize the use of solar energy).  Truly a milestone in today’s technological advancement, we are excited to see how this may transform the automotive industry as we know it.

Shrimp in Coconut Milk Soup

The leftover coconut milk from our Saigon Beef recipe can be used to make this delicious shrimp soup. A perfect meal as we head into fall, it will warm you from the inside while the tropical aromatics of the dish bring a little piece of summer right to your kitchen.  You can adjust the amount of spice depending on your taste, and we generally find that more can be used if you are serving the soup with a starchy side dish like rice or bread.

Roth IRA Conversions: Opportunities and Deadlines

With the possibility of federal income tax increasing soon, a 2012 Roth conversion may be an attractive option.  When you convert a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA, the conversion is generally taxed as ordinary income (except for any after-tax, nondeductible contributions you've made). With the "Bush tax cuts" set to expire at the end of 2012, federal income tax rates will jump up in 2013. Unless Congress acts, we'll go from six federal tax brackets to five.  While there continues to be discussion about extending the expiring tax cuts, many believe there's little chance of resolution until after the November election.

Stronger: Seattle Children’s Hospital

Chris Rumble, a 22-year-old Seattle Children’s Hospital cancer patient has created a truly inspirational music video with the collaboration of doctors, nurses, and fellow patients, to the tune of Kelly Clarkson’s hit song “Stronger.”  I enjoyed it very much and thought you might too – it makes me proud to be a part of this wonderful organization’s Professional Advisors Network.

Trends and Innovations: Liquid Lasers

Will liquid lasers change the way we prevent disease?  University of Michigan researchers have developed a new way of using liquid lasers to detect genetic mutations that may predispose a person to a particular type of cancer or other diseases.

This exciting work could advance our understanding of the genetic basis of disease and aid in disease prevention in the future.

Supreme Court Ruling on Health-Care Reform

On June 28, 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled, in a landmark decision, that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), including the provision that most Americans carry health insurance or pay a penalty, is constitutional.  To help clarify the changes, Health Insurance consultant Jere Meyer has provided us with a handy Health Care Reform Timeline showing the major provisions from 2010 through 2014.

Rock-Candy Award Winning Chili

Seattle 4 Rotary, the largest Rotary Club in the World, proclaimed Rock-Candy Ranch Chili the winners in a fierce Iron Chef type competition between the Queen Anne Rotary and Seattle 4.   Some of the competitors tried to downplay the event by calling it the “annual Rotary BBQ at Paul Heppner’s” but we knew our international reputation was at stake and wanted to put any doubts to rest.  Our incredibly moist carrot cornbread recipe makes a great complement to our Ranch-Style Chili.

Russell Investments versus Index Funds

By Candy J. Lee

I have the privilege of working with individuals who occasionally ask the “why” and “why not” questions.  When they do it helps me realize that it is important to constantly reiterate the reasons we have selected Russell Investments over the other 10,000+ investment options we have available to us.

One particular individual had an IRA which she invested in a small selection of indexed funds.  The funds had outperformed her Russell Investments over the last four years, which begged her to ask the question: “Why am I paying Russell to underperform my own selection?”  I understand this performance lure.  These occasional successful market calls are sirens of the worst order as they make us believe we are smarter than the advisors and that we will outperform them over the long run.

Tesla Model S Debut

While we may not have flying cars quite yet, Tesla Motors is doing its fair share to revolutionize the auto industry as we know it.  On June 22nd the limited-edition Tesla “Signature” series finally made its way into the hands of a few first-in-line customers on Tesla’s long waiting list.  Capable of driving 300 mph on a single charge, you could almost drive from Seattle to Portland and back without plugging in.  Why are we so excited?  Candy will be number 1,089 to receive her very own Model S.

Washington is Now a Long Term Care Insurance Partnership State

Effective January 1, 2012, Washington state is now a Long Term Care Partnership state.  Please find attached an article written by David Johnson for the Bulletin of the King County Medical Society that explains how partnership long term care insurance policies pay benefits to help cover the high cost of long term care services AND protect assets from Medicaid spend-down should the policyholder exhaust their benefits.  Click here to view full article

Trends and Innovations: Recycled Coffee Clothing

Clothing Made from Recycled Coffee
A mocha latte might warm you up on a cold day, but clothing made from coffee beans could keep you warm all winter.  The StayWarm line uses recycled and processed coffee grounds to form the clothing fiber.  According to the maker, Virus, the clothes increase surface temperature by 10 degrees Fahrenheit.  It says StayWarm is only meant as a first layer and to wear additional clothing.  The long-sleeve top is selling for $38 and the men’s compression pants are $54.50.  Information obtained from Investors.com Feb 2012.

Want Milk with Your Coffee?  Add Fabric Made from Milk
When German fashion designer (and former microbiology student) Anke Domaske found she could create a wearable, washable silky fabric out of casein, the milk protein, she achieved something ecologically significant – the first man-made fiber made entirely without chemicals.  It takes only about six liters of milk to make a dress.  It doesn’t smell, and the amino acids in it are antibacterial and anti-aging, Domaske says.  Information obtained from WorthWhile magazine Spring 2012.

Keeping Track of Expiring and New Tax Provisions

Victoria Trigg reminds you that a number of significant federal income tax provisions expired at the end of 2011, a fact that might be easily overlooked with so much attention being focused on the "Bush tax cuts" that are still in effect, but scheduled to expire at the end of 2012. And new Medicare-related taxes, effective in 2013, have received surprisingly little coverage. Of course, new legislation could always extend some or all of these provisions, but here's a quick summary of how things stand.

20th Anniversary for Candy’s Securities Firm, fsic

It is hard to believe that it has been 20 years since we opened our door in the IBM Building in downtown Seattle.  We have experienced many interesting markets since that time.

It was invigorating to review one of my clients who started with us in the beginning and find that they had contributed $1,251,000 million to their account over the years, had withdrawn $1,299,000 and still had $650,000 left.  They have taken out more than they invested and still have $650,000 of investment gain left in the account.  That is the beauty of being a strategic long-term equity investor.

Medicare Changes in 2012

David Johnson reminds you to take note of some of the changes to Medicare in 2012.  Medicare’s health and drug insurance plans change every year, and whether you’re already enrolled or coming up on Medicare eligibility, you need to stay on top of the changes.

Candy and Her Husband, Rocke Koreis, Named to the Pacific Northwest Ballet Board of Trustees

We love the Ballet and have been going since we moved to Seattle from Yakima in 1985.  Since about 1989 we have been subscribers to the Pacific Northwest Ballet and have been Members of the Barre since about 1990.  I took Rocke to his first ballet in about 1988, and he has been in love with it ever since.  One of his most memorable ballets was when Dianne Schurr sang during Kurt Weill’s “The Seven Deadly Sins,” however, favorites are basically all of them.  We look forward to helping the ballet continue to grow and produce wonderful works of art.

Saigon Beef

I can’t believe we have not shared this recipe before.  It is spicy and fun to eat, especially if you like eating messy food with your fingers.   We will buy a whole tenderloin from Costco and cut it up for steaks, use the bigger leftover pieces for Palisades Teriyaki Tidbits (another recipe I need to share) and the final little pieces we use for Saigon Beef.  The leftover coconut milk in these recipes is saved for Shrimp in Coconut Milk Soup which I promise to post next time.

Asparagus Sautéed in Butter and Mustard

We were over in Yakima this weekend helping out Mom & Dad with their property and noticed the Asparagus signs starting to go up.  Asparagus is one of our favorite vegetables and when it is in season we like to eat it often.  The best way to keep it fresh is cut a small amount of the large end off, set them upright in about an inch or two of water, and place them in the refrigerator - they can last for weeks.

We live in little Scandinavia, more commonly known as Ballard, and found a recipe with a unique flavor twist.   You do have to be very attentive - a couple of seconds too long on the butter and the dish is toast, not asparagus.

Potato Omelette

Our friends Sharon & John recommended we post this creative and hearty omelette. Rocke and I find this a delicious alternative to serving potatoes and eggs. The dash of balsamic really adds to the flavor of the potatoes. It takes some time to cook so give you an hour prior to serving. You can serve this as a hearty breakfast for two, or, when cut into smaller portions served with fresh fruit. This is another recipe from our favorite cooking show Laura Calder’s French Food at Home.

Flower & Garden Show - Opening Night

The Arboretum Foundation holds its annual fundraiser and presents a magnificent horticultural display at the Northwest Flower & Garden show each year. It is a wonderful event where you can see the spectacular gardens without a big crowd prior to the official opening of the show. Rocke and I created a photo collection of the pictures we took to share with our gardening friends that did not have an opportunity to attend.

Trends and Innovations: Negative News

If you are reading this post you may reacting to your natural instincts to focus on negative news. This excellent TED presentation traces the roots of this phenomenon and explores the numerous reasons for optimism, rather than pessimism, in today’s world. Are we focused on scarcity and failure when accessibility, possibilities, and abundance are improving each day?

Is Your Mortgage Underwater? HARP 2.0 May Help

Professional Alliance member Conrad Wouters reminds us that HARP 2.0, a revamped version of the Home Affordable Refinance Program, will be made available to homeowners on March 19th. Until now, only a limited number of borrowers had access to this program. With no maximum loan-to-value on 30-year terms and no minimum credit score, the new HARP 2.0 refi program may help, whether or not your home is underwater.

King County Housing Market

The news has been flooded with talk of the real estate market for quite some time, but much the information can be general in nature - what may be true for the nation as a whole may not be true for your region at this point in time. Do you ever wonder how residential home prices, sales, and listings have been behaving in your neighborhood?

There's Still Time to Contribute to an IRA for 2011

There's still time to make a regular IRA contribution for 2011! You have until your tax return due date (not including extensions) to contribute up to $5,000 for 2011 ($6,000 if you were age 50 by December 31, 2011). For most taxpayers, the contribution deadline for 2011 is April 17, 2012. Normally, your tax return must be filed by April 15. However, the IRS has extended the deadline to April 17 this year because April 15 is a Sunday, and April 16 is a holiday in Washington D.C. (Emancipation Day).
You can contribute to a traditional IRA, a Roth IRA, or both, as long as your total contributions don't exceed the annual limit. You may also be able to contribute to an IRA for your spouse for 2011, even if your spouse didn't have any 2011 income.

Don Quixote Trifecta

Pacific Northwest Ballet’s American Premiere of Don Quixote is brimming with wit and romance. Actor Tom Skerritt really adds to the entertainment factor. We were blessed to be able to go to the studio rehearsal to see it up close and personal, then the dress rehearsal followed by the opening night’s stunning performance by Carla Korbes and Karel Cruz.
PNB shipped in the set and costumes from the Dutch National Ballet and they are stunning as well as very expensive to bring to Seattle. This will be a once in a life time opportunity to see them. We highly recommend attending.

Welcome Lena Meyer

I am pleased to announce that Lena Meyer has joined us as our new Relationship Manager, and Nicole Vitelli will move to the role of Operations Manager. Lena will take on your day-to-day contact with Nicole’s support.

Lena is an experienced advisor and financial planner and will be more actively involved in your financial planning management and monitoring. I hope you enjoy working with her as much I do.

Self-Healing Paint

The paint is used on iPhone covers to keep the phones and cases scratch fee. Scratch Shield paint is made with polyrotaxane, which can snap back to its original shape. Small scratches can heal in under an hour while deeper scratches can take up to a week. The paint has a gel-like texture, making it easier to grip. The iPhone covers, made by Nissan, are available in Europe as part of a trial run. I can’t wait until the paint is available for cars, especially ones that have to take the abuse of tight garage parking in downtown Seattle.

2012 Key Tax Numbers

Forfield does an excellent job of summarizing all the key tax numbers in this very condensed version of the most important tax numbers for personal tax filing. Please note that in 2012 the maximum amount you can add to your 401(k) has increased to $17,000 up from $16,500, so don’t forget to increase your contributions to adjust for this increase. The catch up for those over 50 years old remains the same at $5,500. For IRAs the limits have not changed, with a contribution limit of $5,000 and catch up provision of $1,000.

Calculating Cost Basis Gets Easier This Year

Brokers must track and report cost basis to both you and the IRS. Anyone who has ever been baffled by calculating the net proceeds from the sale of an investment will find some relief, starting with the 2011 tax return due April 17. If you bought any stocks after January 1, 2011, and sold them later in the year, you should be receiving information from your broker shortly that tells you the adjusted cost basis of those stocks.

Garage Christening

One of my passions is designing and renovating our home and Yakima property. This winter we finished the renovation of our two car garage which included the installation of two electric car power stations - one for our Nissan Leaf and the other for my long anticipated Tesla Model S.

It was my husband’s goal to be able to convert from a two car garage to a full woodworking shop and back in less than 30 minutes. We had some of our neighborhood friends over to christen the garage and they had fun timing Rocke as he converted from shop to garage in less than 10 minutes.

Shrimp and Hearts of Palm Remoulade

The Holidays tend to be a very broadening experience with all the parties, food and drink so my New Year’s Resolutions usually start with dropping the extra pounds that accumulated in November and December.

We found this delightful salad in the January issue of Bon Appétit that would go well with sour dough or some other special bread, but is good all by itself for those more concerned about their waistline.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR TAX SEASON 2011

Delayed Tax Reporting Due to Cost Basis Reporting Changes: As you prepare for the 2011 tax season, please consider this important information. Due to the Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 and the IRS mandated reporting of cost basis, this tax season will not be like previous ones. By being aware of these changes, you will know how best to plan and set expectations.
